LITTLE  ORATORY  -  PRAYER CORNER

Picture

"Acquire the habit of speaking to God as if you were alone with him,
familiarly and with confidence and love,
as to the dearest and most loving of friends."

Saint Alphonsus Ligouri

Setting Aside A Place to Pray

Setting aside a place to pray within your home serves as a reminder that your home is a place of faith. Any quiet place in your home can be turned into a warm, spiritual environment where your child can think and pray. Tell your child that their prayer table is a reminder of God’s presence in their lives and is meant to be a center of prayer and scripture reading. My children still keep a prayer table in their bedroom as a reminder to pray to God.

Holy Objects

Throughout the year, your child will be bringing home holy objects for their prayer table. Father has blessed these objects. A blessing makes them holy or sets them apart for God’s use. Although they’re symbols, the items on the prayer table command respect and reverence.  Please teach your child to handle them carefully and to keep them clean.

Periodically, remind your child that each holy object has a special meaning and is meant to help us grow closer to God.

  1. The Bible is God's Word. We can read and listen to God's Word and learn more about Him in the Bible.
  2. The Candle brings to mind our Baptism, the first sacrament we received. The light of Christ lives in us.
  3. Mary is the Mother of Jesus. Mary is our Mother, too. She shows us how to trust God.
  4. The Crucifix reminds us that of how much Jesus loves us. He died on the cross for our sins.
  5. Jesus the Good Shepherd reminds us that Jesus is like the shepherd who always loves and cares for His sheep, even when they wander from Him. This year, we will receive God's loving mercy in the Sacrament of Penance.
  6. Holy Water has been blessed by a priest for the purpose of baptism; the blessing of persons, places, and objects; and as a means of protection from evil
  7. Holy Cards help us to reflect on a religious scene or saint and give us an opportunity to offer our prayers.

Other objects you might want to include:
  • Flowers are beautiful reminders that God created all living things for us. He wants us to enjoy and care for His creations.
  • Additional books for sacred reading- prayer books, lives of the saints...
  • Icons
  • Seasonal Objects such as an Advent Wreath, Lenten Rice Bowl...
  • Prayer Box for prayer requests.
  • Prayer Journal
