"Why Memorize Prayers?"
"My Prayers to Know"
"My Prayers to Know" cards (links below) contain all the prayers your child will need to "Learn By Heart." This means we not only learn the words, but also try to understand and live them. The easiest way to help your child to memorize these traditional Catholic prayers is to pray with them every day. Keep your practice sessions to about 5-10 minutes.
Fun Tips
- Begin by showing reverence. Take a deep breath, be comfortable and experience some quiet.
- Pray the first line loud, slowly, and clearly together with your child.
- Then, have your child repeat it on their own until they know it by heart.
- Repeat the process with the second line by itself.
- Now, try to repeat the first and second lines together.
- Continue in the same way until the entire prayer can be prayed from memory.
- Take time to talk with your child about their experience. (Discuss the words of the prayers with your child. What do these words mean? What might God be saying to you when you pray this prayer? What is your favorite prayer? Why? What prayer do you pray when you are in trouble? ...when you hear a siren? How does prayer make you feel?)
Fun Tips
- Pray the first line of the prayer aloud. Pause. Have your child fill in the missing word(s).
- Play "Simon Says" genuflect...
- Act out the prayer.
- Draw pictures of parts of a prayer.
